I was interviewed by Rob Williams on January 18th, 2013 for the Fox 19 Morning News. We discussed Facebook’s new Graph Search functionality and it’s privacy implications.
You can watch this interview and many others on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6w8YYjhQH8.
Some basic information on Graph Search:
-
Graph Search searched four basic areas: People, Places, Photos and Interests
-
In addition to things that you “Like”, Graph Search indexes your profile information so people can find you based information you enter in your profile including schools you went to, jobs you’ve held, your religion, your political leanings and who your friends are, based on information that YOU entered.
-
You can create very interesting searches and discover just about anything that has been posted to Facebook.
-
You can’t find things using Graph Search that are not already available. “No one can see anything that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to see,” said Facebook public policy manager Nicky Jackson Colaco in an interview with VentureBeat. “We don’t want people to be surprised. It’s really bad for them … and it’s bad for us.”
-
Graph Search just makes it easier to find information and creates privacy implications for you based on information you’ve posted and things you’ve “Liked”, some of which you might not want others to know about.
-
You need to understand how your privacy settings can be set block information from searches and/or delete questionable information that you don’t want people to see.
-
You can delete stuff using your Activity Log. “Just to clarify, anything you delete from the site is deleted,” said Colaco. “Activity Log is really the place [to delete content]. It’s a summary of you on Facebook.”
-
Graph Search is still in beta, so get started reviewing your content now!

I was interviewed by Shelia Gray on September 26th, 2012 for the Fox 19 Morning News. We discussed what happens to your digital assets after you die?
You can watch this interview and many others on my YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/OFo50Rj85gc.
Some of the key concepts we discussed include:
- Digital Assets are more than social media accounts; they include online bank accounts, Ebay, Amazon, e-mail, photos, music, books, games, etc. The Cloud makes this problem bigger.
- Some states have passed Internet probate laws including Connecticut and Rhode Island, most haven’t
- U.S. General Services Administration recommends people set up a “social-media will” and have an “digital executor”
- Choose your digital executor carefully, should be familiar with technology
- Review the privacy policies and terms and conditions of each website; stipulate in your traditional will that the “digital executor” get a copy of the death certificate which might be needed to gain access to an account.
- What do you want to happen? Keep accounts open, close them or something in between?
- Do you want family to have access to “private” information?
- Twitter and Facebook allow a deceased users accounts to be removed the proof of a death certificate. Facebook offers the option to turn a profile into a memorial page that allows posting
- Be clear about what you want done. Doing nothing leaves the fate of your accounts and assets up to courts or next of kin.
- Keep accounts and passwords separate from your will, wills become public records and your accounts maybe exposed. Update regularly
- Check out paid services to help plan your digital estate:
- DeadSocial (http://deadsoci.al/) will allow you to continue posting after death, one final message or periodic messages

I’m very pleased announce that I’m one of only 16 people in the nation to earn the new Certified Social Media Strategist (CSMS) certification from the National Institute of Social Media. The NISM Social Media Strategist certification has been developed, and rigorously validated by subject matter experts to set individuals apart from competitors, showcase skills to potential employers and help grow business. The exam is designed to ensure candidates have the critical knowledge and skills to design and implement effective social media programs for individual clients and organizations. According to a recent study, 57% of firms are putting the majority of their social media resources toward hiring a full-time employee to manage their social media initiatives (Booz & Company, 2011), so it’s never been more important to have qualified people making decisions about social media strategy.
I was honored to be invited to take the test to help benchmark the process and provide feedback on the test not only to help NISM improve the test and the process, but also because there are many social media “experts” out there. This new certification is one more way to demonstrate competence in this fast changing but important new field, ensuring that clients get the proper advice and value for their hard-earned dollar.
NISM is dedicated to providing professional social media education and certification. We use the knowledge and experience of a committee of industry advisors to develop social media educational standards, which are used by educators, organizations and students to validate the core skills necessary for success in the world of social media.
I have nearly 4,600 first degree connections and over a 1,000,000 second degree connections on LinkedIn and 5,000 Facebook friends. Dave serves and an instructor and advisor at the Institute of Social Media at Cincinnati State, has given dozens of seminars on social media for local organizations, done many TV and radio interviews on social media and published several articles on social media. If you need help with your social media strategy, or need a speaker for your event, contact me at Libertas Technologies, LLC..
