Not taking security seriously? Read this! The Scrap Value of a Hacked PC

July 5, 2009

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2009/05/the_scrap_value_of_a_hacked_pc.html

This excellent article explains why you MUST take security of your systems seriously! I strongly suggest you read it, even if your corporate IT people take care of security for you.

I urge you to read the following article too, which explains a real-world scan that used a hacked PC to steal $415,000 dollars from a Kentucky county:

CIO: Web Attack That Poisons Google Results Gets Worse

May 19, 2009

http://www.cio.com/article/492966/Web_Attack_That_Poisons_Google_Results_Gets_Worse

This is a major problem for everyday joes, who doesn’t use Google?

Folks, you gotta be careful out there!  Hackers continously come up with new, innovative, devious attacks as evidenced by this one.  As always, be skeptical and make sure that you have some type of anti-virus/security software!  If you’re not sure, ask you IT Administrator, or a dorky friend like me.

ComputerWorld: Preventing Fraud Requires Customer Data Discipline

April 27, 2009

http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4644344/398581790/178145/0/

An increasing number of businesses of all sizes, from the smallest mom-and-pop to the largest corporations, collect more customer data than ever before and this is a trend that will only increase over time as companies look for ways to save money, market better and make it easier for their customers to do business with them.

Whether it’s orders stored in an Excel spreadsheet, or a complex SAP based order entry system, hackers and thieves understand the value of this data and are devising new and ever more devious attacks.  You need to ensure that you understand the risks and make every effort to mitigate the risk to your customers!
